ZIGZAG: ZORAN ZAEV AND MARTIN LUTHER KING

Author: Seladin Xhezairi

In a few days, August 28, marks the 56th anniversary of the historic speech of Baptist clergyman Martin Luther King in Washington. He managed to gather a quarter of a million people to become an inspiration to millions more with a manifesto on the non-violent struggle for justice and freedom, for equality. In fact, there were two reasons to return to his ‘I have a dream’ speech: recent developments in Skopje that erupted as a result of the  ‘Departure’ scandal and as a result of Simon Sineki’s book ‘Start with WHY – how the great leaders’ inspire anyone to act. ‘This is because, first of all, my mind tells me that if all this had fallen into his hands, he would have reacted differently not only to the ‘Racketeering’ case, but generally his actions in distinction, as I have said once again, to our mayor the most successful and the most courageous prime minister.

Anyway, let us go back to the great Martin Luther King. In his famous speech he spoke, not about plans, not about programs, but about a dream that then became a disgrace in America: ‘… Now is the time to make the promises of democracy come true. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children. It would be fatal if this nation exceeded the urgency of the moment. One thousand nine hundred and sixty-three is not the end but the beginning … I have to say something to those who stand on the warm doorstep, which leads them into the palace of justice: In the process of winning our rightful place, we should not feel guilty about our wrongdoing. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of wrath and hatred! We must not raise our efforts in the high sphere of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protests to degenerate into physical violence. We must rise again and again to greatness to unite physical strength with spiritual strength. …..Even though we are facing the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream, deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise and live the true meaning of its faith: We think that these truths are self-evident, that all people are created equal. I have a dream that one day in the red hills of Georgia, the stars of former slaves and sons of former slave owners will sit side by side at the fraternity’s table,“ said Martin Luther King on August 28, 1963.

There is no doubt that 45-year-old Zaev has entered the history of this small country, but with many Balkan dreams, where we do not mind our own business, but we mind someone else’s business! If we go back to the ‘Colorful Revolution’, whether we accept it or not, we will see that its effects leave us no lasting inspiration to do our homework, to ‘change the mindset’, the mentality that Westerners insist on.

And, though this did not happen, the fault does not belong only to the One alone, there are His ‘stars’, they should have fulfilled the ‘Zaevian dream of a society’. Hand in my heart, I am among those who bet before the last parliamentary elections that Zaev (SDSM) would receive as many Albanian votes as Gruevski (VMRO-DPMNE): symbolic! The results overturned my prediction.

Then, as if I was convinced that people trust his philosophy. After three years, many people shrug their shoulders that things were not going, as they should have: The state of the justice leaves much to be desired! Consequently also corruption. Consequently: Lack of accountability and responsibility too!

Bottom line: I am not saying this is the end of the Prime Minister. No! If his ‘stars’ have not read Joseph Fielde, then it is a good idea to start by browsing ‘Start with WHYhow great leaders inspire anyone to act” by Simon Sinek. In it, they will read that ‘Dr. King did not change America alone. For example, he was not a legislator, but it was possible to create a legislation in order to give all people equal rights in the United States, regardless of skin color. It was not Dr. King who changed America; it was the movement of the millions of others he inspired that changed the course of history! ‘
